Thoughts: This is a temporary canvas book cover made to approximate the design found upon the bible of Bartholomew Kuma, of the One Piece manga/animé.
There does not seem to be a single concept for the bible which Bartholomew possesses. In the case of this painting, I'd decided to slightly reduce the size of the frontal text, and significantly reduce the front image, as I preferred that there be more of a border of solid color around the book edges, which would also provide slightly more protection along the oft-handled edges. The canvas itself was laced onto the bible, as opposed to gluing it, or sewing it on with an inner cloth layer.
Some details that were mostly lost in scanning or poor photography include slightly discolored corner areas, minor variations in the stylized rays of light in the front image, minor differences in shade and hue along the back design borders and primary 'cross,' and slightly lighter 'border' shading around the main bible title. As a matter of choice, I had also made the main lavender coloration a few shades darker.
Perhaps one day I hope to disassemble and re-bind a slightly larger, quality bible for a friend, complete with added hardwood covers, and bound in tooled, dyed leather. Alas, time will tell.
Although I am not a religious person, I have always been interested in the material and entirety of religious texts. To that end, I happened across one section from the bible which reminded me of Kuma: (paraphrased from Ephesians 6:10-15, New International Version) "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities... Therefore put on the full armor... So that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, stand. Stand firm..."
Details: A protective canvas book cover made for a small 11cm/4-1/4 inch by 16cm/6-1/2 inch bible of mine. New King James version.
Materials: Treated canvas, Reeves acrylics.
Cynicide: The grainy photographs have caused loss of notable, subtle details. Otherwise, the work itself is nothing special.
