Gift: Coastal double-case

Description

Thoughts: Here is a joined set of cases meant as a gift. Made to be clipped to one's belt loops, or to the rings of a harness belt, it's clip-straps are short to keep it near to the belt itself.

Stylized after the West Coast Native artwork of the indigenous people of Canada, on the left is a bear paw, and on the top flap, stylized mountains. On the right, a corresponding human hand, and on the top flap, waves of the ocean.

In many cultures of the area, the bear is a creature of protection or guardianship, courage, detached self-sufficiency, and also healing. A creature of roaming and land, the mountains are coupled to it because they stand tall above all else, and break the horizon, a reminder that all people need heights to work towards, and that health and strength will always be prominent in one's life.

The open human hand can be a sign of peace, warding, or simple familiarity. One's hands are used to create nigh all things we come into contact with. Likewise, while fire or wind might seem a more fitting choice, I'd chosen water as the corresponding element in this design - as people are adaptive, settling where they have need, always moving or changing with the times. Water is the matter of sustenance and, in stillness, reflection. When frozen, it becomes crystals of so many varieties, and when subject to fire and heat, it evaporates into the air, to later return as clouds - the subject of many dreams and interpretations in the heavens.

I have further interpretations and reasons for those choices as a whole, but those would simply occupy too much detail and good humor/spirit. =p

Details: A pair of leather belt-cases measuring 10cm by 15 cm, 4 cm deep.

Materials: Stoned-oil cowhide leather, black leather lacing, two nickel-plate buckles, and fraud-proof ink.

Woo, I love the native symbol designs. I love how everything you make is symbolic of something or other. It adds a rich intellectual flavor to your work. The threading reminds me of rings off a school book. I wonder if that was intentional or not. Probably not. I'm sure whoever is getting this will be quite happy with it.
Also, shiny buckles! o3o
